The thermal protection switch is typically installed on A/C compressor housings to prevent compressor damage from overheating caused by internal friction. It monitors compressor case temperature and interrupts the electrical circuit when a predetermined temperature threshold is reached.

The thermal protection switch safeguards against overload conditions. This is achieved through a design where a bra shaft is placed inside a brass tube. In these overload relays (also known as "solder pot relays"), the motor current passes through a small heater winding.
